Keepsake Jewelry Explained
Keepsake jewelry lets you carry a small physical connection to someone day to day, rather than only visiting an urn on a shelf. There are a few distinct types, and they're made differently from one another.
Ash jewelry
A small, sealed compartment within the pendant, bracelet charm, or ring holds a pinch of cremated remains, sealed permanently once filled. Most pieces come with a small funnel and instructions for filling them at home, along with a tiny screw or friction-sealed closure to keep the compartment secure afterward.
Good to know: once sealed, most ash jewelry isn't designed to be reopened and refilled. If you think you may want to share remains among several family members later, it's worth deciding that before the piece is sealed.
Fingerprint jewelry
An actual fingerprint, from the person who passed or occasionally a loved one's matching print, is engraved directly into the metal. This requires either a physical fingerprint impression (ink, clay, or a specialized print kit, often provided by the funeral home shortly after passing) or a high-resolution photo of an existing print, scanned and reproduced during engraving.
Good to know: this requires a print captured before cremation, but that's rarely a problem in practice, the funeral home handling arrangements can usually take a fingerprint impression even if it wasn't planned for in advance. It's worth asking them directly and early, since the window closes once cremation has taken place. If cremation has already happened without a print being taken, ash or photo jewelry become the better options.
Photo jewelry
A chosen photo is engraved, printed, or set behind glass or resin within the pendant, sometimes on its own, sometimes alongside a small ash compartment in the same piece. Engraved versions tend to hold up best over years of wear, since printed or resin-set photos can fade with prolonged light exposure.
Caring for keepsake jewelry
- Remove before swimming, showering, or applying lotion, most pieces are water-resistant, not waterproof
- Store in a soft pouch when not worn, to avoid scratching an engraved surface
- Clean with a soft, dry cloth, avoid ultrasonic jewelry cleaners on sealed ash compartments
