Butterfly Raku Urn

Butterflies are worked into the glaze of this hand-fired Raku urn, 8 inches wide and 7.5 tall, standing out against the crackled copper and blue-green ground the Raku process produces. The pattern forms during firing rather than being printed on, so the outlines shift a little from one urn to the next. The top lifts off.

It is an adult-size ceramic urn meant for indoor display, on a mantel, a shelf, or a memorial table. Fill it through the top opening and set the lid back in place. Ceramic is the wrong pick for burial or for a scattering trip, but for a piece that stays in one room it keeps its finish indefinitely.

• Lift the lid off separately when moving the urn; never carry it by the rim
