Behind the front face is a small chamber closed by a screw in the back plate, which is why the front stays completely smooth. Nothing interrupts it, so an engraved name sits centred instead of working around a fitting. The pendant is steel under a gold finish, 1.25 inches tall and 0.75 wide.

The chamber takes a quarter of a cubic inch. That is a pinch of ashes, a lock of hair or a little soil, and not a share of a full cremation. Fill it with the funnel that comes in the box, then screw the back closed. If it is going to be worn every day, a jeweler can seal the thread with adhesive for a few dollars.
