Solid 10-karat gold sets this oval apart from the plated pieces alongside it. The colour is in the metal, so it will not wear thin at the edges over years of daily use. The face is a plain polished oval, unbroken by any pattern, which is the easiest surface there is to engrave.
Inside is a small chamber for a token portion, meaning a pinch of ashes or a lock of hair. It will not hold a full set of ashes, and no pendant this size can. Many families keep the bulk of the ashes in an urn at home and divide a small amount between pieces like this one, so that everyone who wants to carry something has it.
