Capacity follows body weight at about one cubic inch per pound, so a newborn needs very little and a 30 lb toddler needs roughly 30 cu in. Most families choose something a little larger than the strict minimum, because it sits better on a shelf, not because it has to. If a funeral home is holding the ashes, they can fill the urn for you before you collect it. Engraving with a name and a single date is available on most of these pieces.
